Kathleen & Kathleen: (does that make you Kathleen 'squared'?)

You're very welcome! I had fun just inventing those silly things...

Re: This morning's presentation to kick off an 18 hours Lactation Course
for this gov't hosp.'s staff. It went very well, made them laugh, relax,
so that they could reflect on the immeasureable importance of what they are
trying to do: Become a Baby-Friendly Hosp.

In whispered conversations with the Head of Nursing and the Head of
Pediatric services, who are the motors behind this push for UNICEF BFHI
certification...it seems that the Director of the Hosp,(who is
pathetically/or shall I say *ironically*? a Pediatrician) is not very hot
about this program, apathetic, etc.
In fact, this is the *only* non-Baby Friendly large public hosp.
remaining in the city...so the staff is way behind. And the dedicated few
feel sort of like the members of the last-place team in a Major League
playoff. They've asked my support by showing up for some of the sessions
during the next two mornings, which I plan to do.
In truth, they told me that maybe 4/5th of the meds. giving the classes
(with material that is handed to them to impart) don't believe-in or follow
those directives. Sounds like they have a very long way to do.

Thanks for asking about the talk. The GREAT thing, is that their P.R. gal
was on hand to interview me afterward, and she said that her article would
be placed in all 3 of the city's newspapers. So word about LC's etc. will
get out to the medical community here, which is still rather unaware of the
existence of our profession.

I also took Laurence, BF and Human Lact. and the thick Drugs during Preg.
and Lact.tome with to show them that this is a real field. They were all
most impressed and several want to order the books for the hosp. library.
This was a side-benefit I hadn't expected.

One more thing....I need to tell all, and I mean ALL of you on LactNet,
that for the first time I felt like I was literally representing a body of
people (YOU, my new friends and fellow LCs), a dignified well-established
profession, and that what I did this morning would have a direct effect on
LC's everywhere.
And I also felt your support as I stood at the podium. \
Pretty wonderful stuff, eh?

Have a great day, gang.

Roberta
