I just returned from yet another medical mission to Haiti and the Dominican
Republic.  I have not been on the Lactnet for almost a month.
I wanted to relate this item from Haiti.
There is a big campaign in Haiti to get mothers to breastfeed.  The posters say:

Let Tet Se Riches Timoun
Breast Milk is the Richest (Best) for the Child

Sadly, though, we lost a baby during our medical mission.  A mother brought in
her seven month old baby.  The baby weighed four pounds and was severly wasted.
The mother stated that she had pains in her body and acid in her stomach (very
common complaints in Haiti), so she felt that her breast milk had to be bad
because of these complaints.  So she had not breastfed her baby this whole time.
Sadly, also, there was not much food available to feed the baby (condidtions are
still horrendous in Haiti).  We tried to nourish the baby, but the baby died
several days later.
