Hi all,

Just a thought here...
A few years ago at a LLL conference in Spain, Fedro Peccatori (Ob
oncologist who has done a lot of research on breasfeeding in these moms)
had an interesting discussion with Carlos Gonzalez about weaning. When you
do an abrupt weaning, the lactocites and rest of the glandular tissue
suffer an apoptosis (cell death) with quick de-structuring and reabsorption
of the tissue. The issue raised was, if there are cancer cells in the
breast, and by a quick, abrupt weaning (in order to operate/treat the
cancer) we bring about massive apoptosis, would this not facilitate cancer
cell dissemination? Should weaning in these cases not be very very gradual,
regardless even of wether the baby/child is drinking that milk (if mother
has already started chemo)?

They came to no conclusion, but I think it is a very interesting issue to
keep in mind and investigate.

Hugs,
Kika
