In a message dated 99-09-21 22:56:12 EDT, you write:

<< ...It includes all the research showing the oxytocin is an
anti-depressant, as well as the research showing much less PPD in countries
where breastfeeding is the norm... Kelly Peyton summarized all this research
in her master's thesis on this topic (under my direction) -- >>

Don't need the entire thesis-just the ref citations would be great! Those of
us interested in such research then can look them up. (Hmm, think I'll try to
get to internet PsychLit for a search soon.) BTW, the decrease in depression
or PPD in other countries doesn't totally hold up due to use of somewhat
different diagnostic criteria--in spite of WHO ICD criteria norms for
emotional-behavioral disorder diagnoses.

Re: << I attended a talk by a psychiatrist... I remember him stating that ppd
can be delayed by breastfeeding & may show up after weaning. This sounds like
breastfeeding does not promote ppd but may actually inhibit it. >>

Do you still have your syllabus? Would love those ref citations The last time
I did an extensive Medline/Psych Lit/CINAHL search on PPD (within last few
years), breastfeeding as possible cause (low estrogen) was refuted in several
good studies, but breastfeeding as cure (oxytocin?) was never even mentioned
in the refs I found. I would love all these citations!!!! BTW, a year ago I
heard Cheryl T Beck speak on this topic--she's done a lot of research,
starting with qualitative (phenomenonological) and moving to quantitative.
She was working on a PPD study at that time with Jeanne Watson Driscoll.
AWHONN recently published a seminar she wrote for them.
