Diane, I think part of is it that we are a breast obsessed culture.  And  a
breast cancer obsessed culture and we know that lumps <gasp> are NOT
good......so we jump to the wrong conclusions and run to the dr.  And I do
remember the budding and tenderness and how the boys teased as we began
wearing bras.  I even remember one teacher who took a girl aside and told
