This discussion on where funds for conferences and such has me thinking
about my new job. I have been a stay-at-home mom and LLL for many years
(SAHM for about 11 yrs, LLLL and CBE for 8 yrs). We bought a house a few
years ago (in an older neighborhood) so we are starting many renovations and
needed a small boost in our income. Also my mother recently retired making
having a part-time job very easy. I work for a local baby store at the Baby
Registry desk (I am also the breast pump expert - the pumps are in next
aisle over from our desk). We always have the formula club sign-ups at our
desk for the newly registering parents and the newest "free give-a-way" to
entice the mothers to join. We are not allowed anything on our desk other
then the phones/fax machine - no product, no advertising, no stack of flyers
or brochures (even the company ones), but we can have the big sign to sign
up for the club. I do not ask the parents if they want to join (the other
employees do). Everyone thinks I am a nutcase because I say we are whoreing
ourselves to the formula company. I talk about violating the WHO code - the
response is, but we sell it - we are a baby store. I counter that selling
is one thing - advertising to expectant parents is a violation of the code.

I feel conflicted everytime a mother fills out the card, but I put it in the
envelope to mail out so our store gets "credit" but no one understands that
seeing the cute bunny or bear is adverstising and product recognition.

Oh well - just had to vent and wonder why we have to keep getting these
things.
