Carol,
I was not offended by your post--I'm too hard-shelled for that! However, as
the person who brought up the topic of strokes, I felt like I had been
misrepresented. Also, I found it curious that you changed my original
subject, "Breastfeeding after a Stroke" to a new subject "Stroke causing low
milk supply?" Do you really feel they say the same thing? That was not my
intent at all. Maybe you are reading into these questions something that is
not there. I say that because your assumption that my "first reaction is
yes, this could be a problem, I need proof that it won't be" was not correct.
I made no such assumption. In fact I felt quite confident that the stroke
would NOT cause a decrease in supply. However, since I do not understand
totally the physiological effects of stroke, I could not presume that there
were none regarding lactation. And so it was this lack of understanding
about a very serious assault to the body (not an automatic assumption of
problems) that prompted me to ask what I did.
Also, I do not follow your reasoning that asking a question as to how a
medical condition impacts breastfeeding means "we don't trust breastfeeding."
The fact is that there ARE medical conditions that DO affect
lactation--sometimes negatively and sometimes even positively. Understanding
the impact that a condition has helps us to better guide and support a mother
in such a situation.
One last thing--you mentioned that stroke "is something that happens often
enough that we know quite well what the effect is." I don't know who you
mean by "we," but it certainly wasn't true for me. And I am sure there are
others like me on Lactnet who didn't know either. All of us come here with
different backgrounds and degrees of experience. Lactnet is for sharing and
learning. I'm often surprised at the intimidation people seem to feel when
submitting their first introductory post. I would hate for people to feel
uncomfortable about asking questions.
