Dear Lactnet,
I have heard from a mom I saw early on in her BFing (ankyglossia, sore
nipples).
Her 4 month old began having watery stools and/or greenish/brown stools 3
weeks ago. A local ped GI scoped the baby last week and reported ulcerated
gut mucosa etc. I am assuming this is a food allegy or oversupply mitigated
secondary lactose intolerance?
He told mom she should move on to Nutramigen or Pregestimil but did not
preclude continued nursing either. She is on a dairy free diet now. Was
heavy on nuts, milk and eggs last trimester and is vegetarian.
She is going to try a regimen of 24 hour treated pumped milk with lactase
drops she found and ordered off Internet. She is also taking enteric coated
pancreatic enzymes to breakdown proteins in her system.
Stools are still very watery right now. She will begin with the treated
milk tonight. The baby is engaging and happy but has only gained 7 oz in 21
days.
With all the collective wisdom on this site, what else can she take or do
to facilitate healing of the gut? The baby declined a bottle of formula last
night so she is hoping to keep exclusive breastfeeding. We need specific
drop amounts per ounce (the enzymes are Creon 20s so she is taking one per
meal) and any other strategies you can think of. I have been to the
archives.

Thanks in advance!
