While the literature seems to point out that Vitamin D shortage may
be a legitimate concern for SOME mom/baby pairs, the recommendations
are given as for EVERY mom. Several posters have pointed this out.
I can't help but wonder if the blanket recommendation isn't a case
of PC (political correctness) gone to extreme. Don't get me
wrong-we definitely need to look at how we say things so as not to
be discriminatory or let any racial, cultural, religious etc. biases
influence what we say and how we say it. However, it does seem in
this case that the research is identifying "groups" such as: those
with poor diets, those who do not (for religious or whatever
reasons) get "normal" skin exposure to the sun, those with more
melanin in their skin, etc. as the ones with greater potential for
inadequate Vit. D intake. Imagine the flak if AAP came out with a
statement like; "If you are black, poor and/or Orthodox Muslim. your
baby may not get enough Vitamin D." This would definitely open a
big can of worms!
Hopefully, we will reach a point where the inherent oneness of the
human race will be so well accepted and incorporated in everyone's
mindset that when there are legitimate differences, they can be
honestly expressed without fear of offending or being misunderstood!

Winnie
