I flat out tell moms that "The only pumps made to establish a milk supply is
a hospital grade or rental quality pump. Nothing they can buy or was
purchased and borrowed is sufficient for establishing a milk supply. They
can look in the manufacturers guidelines. Both Ameda and Medela say their
purchased pumps do not establish a milk supply." This information is also in
The Breastfeeding Answer Book, etc., etc. (and all the other technical LC
books too!).

My analogy is to cars. Dad's understand cars. I say pretend you are driving
from New York to California. Want to go in a 1970 Volkswagon Beetle (the
Evenflow, First Years, etc.), or in a big SUV or a cadillac (the rentals)??

I also say that the Evenflow can do tissue damage because the suction levels
are too high. This has been on Lactnet maybe or in The Breastfeeding Answer
Book. I also tell them to take it back to the store and DEMAND their money
back if they've had tissue damage or pain upon use, even if the packaging
says non-returnable if used.

Consumers deserve to know. (I also tell people I don't sell or rent pumps so
I have no financial interest in telling you this.)

I used to be more nice, like "oh, maybe you can make do with that pump." But
not anymore, after having moms struggle for 2 weeks before they finally are
convinced that they have the wrong equiptment. Get the right pump and you
see a world of difference!
