I totally agree with you on this point.  I recall back in the mid-80's when I
was working on my masters assisting with latching stable, preterm infants as
young as 30 weekers onto the breast.  They latched!  And, so I focus on
getting these babies onto the breast as soon as possible not only to sustain the
milk production, but to have them "experience" breastfeeding.  How are they to
learn if they don't gain the opportunity to practice?  I don't get this....I
recently assisted a mom with breastfeeding her 35 week twins.  Her discharge
instructions were to try to offer the breast once a day, and otherwise pump and
feed the babies per bottle.  Once I got linked up with her for follow-up, we got
the babies onto the breast immediately, and we measured their intake
accurately so that supplementing was not done blindly, but done accurately.
