My first baby was born 27 years ago in the UK. I had to keep a feed chart
detailing the 3x3 mins every 4 hours, then 5x5 mins every 4 hours the next
day then 7 x 7 mins every 4 hours the next day and so and so on until we
reached 10x 10 mins every 4 hours.
I was a new midwife 5 months into practice when she was born and taught
that regime exactly.
When my baby was born I knew instinctively that she or I would not survive
the 'regime' so I began baby led feeding-BUT I falsified my chart for the staff's
benefit and to make me seem normal and compliant. I continued baby led
feeding and at 1 year she still had 6-8 feeds in 24 hours, they didn't tail off
until around 15-16 months which coincided with increased mobility.
At 3 months only 3 from my ante natal class of 12 were breast feeding, at 6
months only 2 fully and 1 partial and at 12 months only 1-me, at 2 years still
me but with a seriously concerned Health Visitor who used to talk of 'damage'
to my baby and me.
This also fits with another post of co-sleeping I did it but I didn't tell, I did it
and didn't tell with baby number 2-23 years ago, I did it and told everybody
with babies 3 and 4 born 6 and 7 years ago.
I now encourage every one else to do it as well within the bounds of safety.
The Times article refers to a study in New Zealand where I live and work and
refers to the other factors of alcohol and smoking-so prevalent and so
damaging in the obvious direct and the indirect ways like preventing co-
sleeping.
