Having a new mama like this who is doing so well despite significant
obstacles made my week. And I've been heaping praise on her for responding
so well to her baby's cues at every opportunity I get. Now hopefully she'll
get the support she needs to continue to breastfeed.

i just read this post and it really hit me today how absolutley wonderful it
must be to have your actual health care professionals/peds/nurses praise and
support you for baby centered/ap practices. i just wanted to say you ppl can
make all the difference in the world in a child's life! when i think back on how
many peds i've already gone through b/c of non baby friendly practices and
advice....well, i would pay your weight in gold to have had you as my dr. i am
strong and confident enough to stand my ground and even educate my peds about a
few things (she had no idea you could tandem nurse a toddler and newborn,
never saw an almost 4 yo still on mama's milk vs cow's milk, would have never
b/l'd an 18 month old could really potty-train himself - even through the night,
had no idea cloth diapers were so convenient and helpful to potty-training,
etc...) but i think i would just burst into tears of joy if i walked in and
didn't have to be defensive about putting my babies first. even if you're not my
health care workers, 'knowing' you believe as i do with all your experience and
education certainly gives me the bolster i need to continue to explain to my
ped i am doing what is best for my children. we only see her once a yr, my
kids are never sick and i only allow one vax per annual visit and we are at the
point now where she respectfully states, 'you have the healthiest, brightest
and happiest kids i almost never see, you must be doing something right!' and as
for the questionnaire about what they eat, where they sleep, how long they
sleep, whether they drink whole cow's milk yet, i simply respond that we are
fine on all counts and i don't have any reasons for concern in any of those
areas. if i get a new, insistent nurse, i politely tell her i don't feel those are
medical concerns but parenting ones and i don't come to my dr.s for parenting
advice. (another gem i gleaned from this list!) i do sometimes still succumb
to temptation and mischief and still reply that they don't get cow's milk b/c
they still get human milk... but the thrill is wearing off the more often i see
utter confusion on the face of the nurse. they simply can't imagine an almost
4 yo still going to breast, one actually asked me do i mean i still have
stores of frozen milk i'm using up for him. !
but i digress. when i read jennifer tieman's post this morning, i was
completely overwhelmed with how wonderful it would be to have a dr. like that and how
lucky are those moms who do! if they don't realize you are worth a price
above rubies, don't worry - i do! so i thought i'd write a little note and say the
world is a better place for all of you and even though we all get discouraged
in this work of being a drop in the ocean, i can't think of many more
worthwhile jobs! thank you all on behalf of families everywhere.

jacqui gruttadauria, whose boys are planning to catch santa tonight if they
have to stay up til tomorrow!
