Perhaps the mother with the precipitous weight loss should have some thyroid
function studies done.  Hyperactive thyroid, or Grave's disease can present
in this manner.  She may also feel very warm all the time, have a more rapid
than normal heart rate.  My husband had vague joint pain, that he attributed
to his advancing age :-)...40's, ha!
It's worth a shot.
