OLYMPIA - Kim Rechner jumped into Olympia politics as a volunteer citizen lobbyist about five years ago.
Her first project: promoting a bill to fund an existing program that labels employers “infant friendly” if they provide lactation support programs for workers. The measure also called for the creation of a task force to study breast-feeding women in the workplace.
“I was nave in thinking, ‘This is a no-brainer,’ and that it would pass in one session,” recalls Rechner, 42, of Olympia.
“I pursued that for a couple of years, and testified and lobbied anybody who would listen to me.” The bill didn’t go anywhere, but it established the mother of two as a regular player on the Capitol Campus.
In fact, the citizen lobbyist has become the face of moms across the state who have been asked to cover up or leave a public space while feeding an infant. And she’s become an inspiration for moms who want to continue nursing, but don’t have an employer that will make accommodations for pumping and storing breast milk.
For Rechner, lobbying came as naturally as, well, breast-feeding.
“It’s easy to talk about something you love,” Rechner said. “I waited 11 years to have kids, and I had no idea that I would feel so passionate about how important breast-feeding is. And that made talking about it easy.”
