I, too, thought there would be lots of comments on Ophrah's show. I made a
point to put it on because of the alerts ahead of time on Lactnet. I have
never seen Ophrah before, so don't know what to compare it with. Also, my
son was calling me out of the room much of the time, so I didn't get to pay
attention to it, and felt I had little basis to comment fairly. Of the
section I saw, I will never forget the stricken face of the mother who was
seeking help with her 3 year old daughter's continued nursing, as the male
"expert" told her to take charge and tell that child, calmly and rationally
at another time of day, that they would not be nursing any more. Then to
stick to this. There was no mention of the fact that sudden weaning in
this "cold turkey" manner put the mother at risk of mastitis, or the
distress it could cause to both mother and child. No benefits of continued
breastfeeding or of other resources or opinions or ways of handling the
situation were mentioned. Is this the way it really was, or am I
remembering it wrong? I found it very painful to watch and very
infuriating! I felt this mother's obvious distress and struggle with her
daughter deserved a lot more time and listening to her feelings and
solutions than a brief TV spot could give. I could feel for her
unhappiness with the present situation. She needed to be heard and helped
to work out her own solution, not be told by some self-styled expert what
she "must" do.

were 4, and we never knew that that last time was the end of our
breastfeeding relationship forever)
