Have to weigh in with another thought about nighttime parenting. It is far
more than breastfeeding, in my mind. Think about it. We have children who
have nightmares and other things that generate need for parents at night
long after they wean themselves.

I recall sweeping out Doug's closet when he was 4-5 yr old and then placing
one of the cats at the foot of his bed "to guard", which Doug loved.

Whenever there was a thunderstorm, the clap of thunder was nearly always
follwoed by the galloping of his small feet and four sets of paws, all of
whom jumped, climbed into my bed for cuddling.

Ditto the first cold night of fall after warm, sleep under the sheets only
summers.

And for three nights after Doug totalled the car (at age 17!), he was in my
bed, too! It was obviously for more than relaxing his sore neck. He
needed that special comfort that touching at night from a loved one can
provide.

Was he still a breastfeeding baby for any of these times. No. But the
need for comfort was still there and most obvious in the dark of night....

Why must we think our babies/children must be stronger than adults (who as
spouses) sleep together?
