>>>Early intervention (before down-regulation of milk supply and maternal
panic set in) has always been, in my exper. the way to go. Early
intervention can be gentle, non-hysterical, and very supportive.
Intervention way down the line is often too little, too late.

...and what Jane also found was that a home visit was the only way to
provide this early intervention - because mom's report by telephone was
often not adequate to identify early problems. If you went by mom's report
of # of diapers, you would miss too many problems!

She also has reported (I don't know if in this presentation, but in others)
that 85% of these women who were very dedicated to breastfeeding and
usually had had various methods of prenatal education, needed "professional
intervention". Again, her information provides additional impetus for our
profession.

Having just lost the opportunity of getting a "Prop 10" Grant here (the
Commissioners want to deal with "real" problems like drug addiction and
abuse), I'm very discouraged about trying to find funding for the type of
problem I know works. The barriers are:
1. $$$ (To market the program to the Powers That Be)
2. The need to see every mom early - which means finding them and signing
them up prenatally or while they are in the hospitals so that we can make
home visits. (One of our hospitals sees us as a problem, because of
confidentiality and won't let our program be implemented there.)
3. $$$ (To implement the program.)

Hope I get some "charging" at the ILCA Convention!
