I need all your collective wisdom. A special friend is expecting her third baby soon. Request from mom to help find an answer. History: 1st boy born 2000. During pregnancy mom's fingernails lifted off the nail bed. After years of seeing dermatologists was finally diagnosed with psoriasis. Totally natural birth, no separation, breastfeeding VERY painful, frenulum & frenum clipped by the best. Nipple skin broke down from friction. Treated very aggressively for thrush, no improvement. Pumping painful, gave up. Girl born 2005, again natural,no separation, extreme pain. The skin on nipples shedding off, bleeding and severely cracking. Nursed about two weeks in extreme pain, even pumping painful, gave up.
Third baby due soon and mom was ready to try again. Mom began treatment August 2006 with Enbrel 50 mg. 1X a week IM, and has been on it during the pg. & nails are fine and no sign of psoriasis until about 2 weeks ago when the bottom of her feet began to burn and show signs of rash, red bumps, indicating psoriasis and nipples have become VERY sensitive. I checked with Dr. Hale and it is extremely unlikely that clinically relevant amounts would transfer. Now with the flair up on her feet & tender nipples she is afraid to put baby to breast.
Before Enbrel mom tried several natural remedies such as herbs etc.nothing changed.
Any ideas? Breastfeeding is very important to her. Post privately if you want [log in to unmask]
Thanks for any suggestions, Geneva Carnahan, Dayton, Ohio USA
