Could the pregnant woman with the painful purple nipples have yeast
problems? You don't have to be breastfeeding for your body to have a yeast
imbalance, and if she has started leaking collostrum, she might have a
moist environment on her nipples where the yeast could thrive, even without
a baby around. Has she been taking antibiotics or doing anything else that
might predispose her to a yeast infection?
