Jan,
We use the medela classic and still find that many women require 5-7
pumpings before even a cc or 2 is obtained. For this reason, we do initiate
pumping after 3 attempts or 6 hours.
I sometimes wish that the containers weren't clear so that moms wouldn't be
discouraged with the small amount that they obtain. Support, patience and
encouragement and soon the milk supply increaseses. I tend to find that with
primigravidas, or first time breastfeeders tend to really massage, squeeze
etc.quite strongly in order to get milk, thus perhaps causing themselves
some temporary soreness from hand expressing. A pump has a more regular
action and it does help to tell the mom not to expect very much initially,
but when baby 'wakes' or finally does go to the breast, her supply will meet
his needs.
Marilyn
