I have worked with several mothers who gave this remarkable gift to another
family. One woman called me because the LC at the hospital and her OB told
her when she left the hospital that she should not pump or do anything and
the milk would just go away. She called me when she was in great pain.

What I suggest at the stage of stopping pumping regularly is whenever she
is very uncomfortable she pumps the breasts (or breast) thoroughly--no
more than once or twice a day. This will not maintain a milk supply but
will relieve her pain, prevent mastitis and damage to her breast.

She will find that one day she has to drain the breasts once a day, while
another day she has to do it twice. Once-a-day will become more common
then every couple of days, etc.

I have them continue the sage (1/4 tsp 4 times a day) until they are going
several days without needing to pump. Then they can gradually reduce the
number of times a day they take the sage. They can also add parsley and
peppermint if they wish.

Occasionally a woman will go without sage or pumping for a week or so and
one day wake up with full, uncomfortable breasts (or more likely one
breast). Depending on the level of discomfort she can either pump or let it go.
