I'm a few days behind on posts (what's new) but I'm jumping in here.
I've worked as a midwife in an Australian hospital since 1992,and here in
the USA since October last year. I was stunned to see babies being 'sponge'
bathed so I set about trying to change things (no success yet). I did an
extensive lit search and most of the literature out there I could find on
bathing babies relates to how it affects their temperature control. The few
articles I could find on bathing and cords didn't show any rise in infection
when immersion bathing rather than sponge bathing, but what looked to be the
very best articles where in German, which unfortunately I neither read nor
speak.

Despite bringing all the references with extracts to the person on the
mother-baby commitee nothing has changed, I believe because ONE member of
the commitee had a cord infection in one of her kids and has a 'thing' about
it
