I need help from all of you 'Wise Ones',
I work in a large level 3 NICU as the LC (16 paid hours/week). When I
first started there almost 6 years ago I found it to not be very
breastfeeding friendly. I can't in all honesty describe it as
breastfeeding friendly now, but we usually have 75-85% of our moms
pumping and or breastfeeding. Many of the nurses refer any/all
breastfeeding questions and/or issues to me. We had a baby admitted
last week whose mom was still breastfeeding her 26 month old. I didn't
tell anyone else because I was fairly sure it would cause a sensation
among the nurses. Apparently, the mom mentioned it when I was off and
today I was bombarded with questions about her "abnormally long
breastfeeding". I tried to explain that it wasn't necessarily
abnormally long and there were definite benefits to both mom and
toddler. Does anybody have any other ideas or ways I could have done a
better job with these young (average age late 20's) nurses? They are
only gradually (also read slowly) learning that the breast has any
function other than sexual.
