Hello Everyone!
Since starting my private practice (in Nov.) I haven't had much time to talk
but I could use some input now. Here's some backround info.
Premie girls born 34 weeks.(Each over 4lbs. at birth) Three weeks in hospital
(gavage, bottles and a little breast). Mom pumped every 3hrs. or so. Baby #2
on heart monitor at home. Home three weeks when Mom contacted me, She had the
stomach flu over the weekend and menses returned. She was concerned about low
supply and proper latch on and infrequent stooling (once every 7days ) She
was using one bottle for each for one night feed. Dr. pleased with weight
gain #1 5 lbs 11 oz. # 2 5lbs. 8oz at 6wks. old. I worked on latch on and
positioning and showed her some suck training to help them get their mouth to
open wider. Also gave Mom a written care plan with some basics rousing and
frequent feeds (8 - 10 times/day at least) and a log to track everything. Mom
got some rest and supply seemed to be improving at about 71/2 weeks (about
10days after original due date) babies both seemed to have a growth spurt.
Weight check at Drs. #1 6 lbs. 11oz. #2 6 lbs . Baby #2 has the most latch on
problems. Stooling for both babies still infrequent #1 every 7 days and # 2
gets a suppository (Dr. idea) if she hasn't gone in 7days. Stools are copious
when they occur. Mom is still over whelmed by everything!! She is highly
motivated though and mostly needs reassurance. Any advice about nursing twins
in general and /or thoughts on their stooling habits would be helpful.
