Dear Lactnetters,
Please help me find information about finding Donor Milk for a newborn
whose mother is critically ill. This couple were in my Lamaze class that
ended just before the holidays. She developed toxemia last week and the
baby ( a little girl) was born this past Saturday at 35 weeks gestation.
About 12 hours after giving birth this mama "crashed" going into severe
HELLP and with several other complications. She is in ICU and yesterday
was given a 15% chance of pulling through this,(prayer would be welcome
:-)
Daddy is wanting only breastmilk for his daughter and is amazed that the
nursery seems to disregard their wishes ( no paci, nuk nipplesonly, etc.)
Unfortunately, alternative forms of feeding are not within the policy and
those of us who know how have to be sneaky.....He is concerned about Jen
being able to breastfeed after all this. I gave him reassurance as best I
could without saying the obvious. We did talk about the use of Donor Milk
and I know that I once saw a post on Lactnet about ordering milk to be
sent in where no human milk bank is available. We are in Louisville ,
Kentucky. Daddy is very much interested in finding out what he can do to
get this milk for his baby girl "until" mama can breastfeed herself. He
said that breastfeeding was something he and Jen had decided to put 100%
of their effort into and now that everything else has gone wrong he feels
that getting Donor Milk for the baby is the one thing he CAN do to help.
Thanks in advance for your help. They are such a sweet couple and very
young.
