Hi Cindi,

I am a little behind on my lactnet email, so forgive me if this has already
been answered. This issue is something I have dealt with with both of my
babies, and I have talked to one or two moms with the same issue. After
about 6-7 months I began having a problem having MER in response to pumping.
Of course, the more I worried whether or not I was going to get MER, the
less likely it was to happen. What has always worked best for me is
applying a warm compress for about 5 minutes prior to pumping. It works
like a charm pretty much every time.

Hope that helps!

Subject: Little milk when pumping

Hi all,
One of my steady, committed to breastfeeding moms is having trouble all of a
sudden with getting any milk when she pumps. Her baby is 6 months old and
she has been using a PNS Advanced for over 3 months now with no problem,
except for the last week. She used my Symphony over the weekend and was
able to get a few ounces when she pumped. She states she used to be able to
get 5oz when she pumped with the Advanced. Now drops. She is worried that
she is not getting any let-downs because she is used to feeling them and
hasn't felt them in over a week, except occasionally. Her baby nurses well
and gets over 4oz at a feeding (based on ac/pc wts).

She is going to do the troubleshooting with Medela and may get a new pump.
I don't have a vacuum gauge so I can't check the pump out myself. I've
discussed Rescue Remedy with her and nursing on one side while pumping the
other to help "train" her body to let down to the machine.
I showed her how to do RPS, but it doesn't seem to do much. Maybe we're
doing it wrong?

Have any of you worked with mothers who have been pumping for a long time
find that they suddenly aren't letting down to a pump? Any ideas other than
relaxation techniques (breathing, music). I'm thinking the pump might have
something to do with it, but not all, as she pumped less milk than usual
with the Symphony pump as well.

Thanks in advance,
