What I see in the hospital settings is babies swaddled tight in blankets in
their bassinets (maybe a pacifier in their mouth) and the mom's looking at
the clock to determine when is the next feeding.
I know what other hospt LC's are saying but the timing issue is too
dominating. I would prefer a mom record the baby's phases of sleep then to
mark down every 2-3 hours if the baby fed and the diapers.
When I walk in the room I take the baby out of the bassinet, unwrap them and
place them in their mother's arms. Then I describe what they are to look for
in a feeding cue which is when to gently wake them to feed.
I agree that labor interventions play a very large negative role, but other
hospt routines also interfere; pedi rounds (most insist that babies be in the
nursery during this time), group classes (moms do not tend to brfd in these
classes), visitors, ect.
I know that many hospt nurses want the brfdg to go well but the timing issue
gets too much focus. Where this gets reinforced is in written literature
that is handed out to the moms.
I would like more emphasis on skin-to-skin, feeding cues, reassurance that
cluster fdgs are good and normal and less on time.
Nikki, I would like to see less strict fdgs schedules on premies also, ESP
when they are going to the breast.
Off my soap box. These comments are not meant to be negative of what others
practice, just thought provoking.
