Once again I have a question to pose to all of you and your wonderful
collective wisdom!
I recieved a call from a mom whose baby has been having sever 'colic'
symptoms since aprox. one week of age -- baby is now 3 1/2 months old.
She exclusively bf for the first month, but due to advice from her Ped.,
began giving ABM to see if that would relieve the babies symptoms. She
continued to maintain her supply using a hospital grade rental pump. She
then began 'the great formula switch' to find a formula that the baby
could tolerate. None of these changes helped, and the baby remained as
miserable as ever. Her Ped. treated baby for reflux, but no change in
baby's behavior was noted. Now the ped wants the baby on Nutramigen --
but baby wants nothing to do with it. (Ped. then told mom to give baby
Pedialyte to prevent dehydration, and when baby was hungry enough he'd
take Nutramigen... yikes!). Now, since I've NOT evaluated this dyad in
person I really can't comment much on the treatment history this baby has
recieved, or of the diagnosis... but I wanted to see if anyone had an
answer to the question this mom asked me... : Is there any way to treat
the almost 2-months worth of stored breastmilk she has in her freezer so
that the proteins would be broken down in a similar way to the Nutramigen
that the baby hates?? She's aware of the Pancreatic Enzymes that SHE can
take to minimize protein transfer from her diet into the breastmilk, but
that won't help her use the stored milk. Also, throughout all of this
she's cut way back on pumping and her supply has suffered greatly.
Thank you all once again for your wisdom!

Sincerely,
Jeanne Cygnus, The Art of Breastfeeding, Illinois, USA
