Debbie asked: "Denise, how much milk would you expect to express by hand or
with a hospital grade pump in a mom 8hrs postpartum? Primip=~?cc.
Multip=~?cc."

I'd like to offer a response. I'm reluctant to say EXACTLY how much I would
expect to get, but I would like to offer some suggestions. I suggest mom
express (hand express is fine) every 1.5 hrs or so or even more often if
baby is showing signs of getting interested. If we have her do it every 3 or
4 hrs we may not get much at all. A couple cc's or a tsp is possible. I've
seen multips get 10-15cc. As a general guide, in the first 24 hrs or so, and
with a healthy full term baby, I sometimes add glucose water to the
colostrum to get a little more volume, maybe 5 or 10cc. I admit I do this to
appease the nurses and to help the baby pee so that other (non bf-friendly)
interventions are avoided. I am not a fan of cold cloths to the baby's face,
etc. but I do like unwrapping the baby down to the diaper, no bra on the mom
and cuddled skin to skin contact. Couple this with the expressing and gently
offering it to the baby and this usually gets a fair feeding. I like to put
a little dab of colostrm under each nare of the baby and put a little in his
cheek and on tongue. I get good results with this.
