Johanna,
Does the woman you mentioned have psoriasis in her family (or does she
have)?  My good friend developed cracked nipples when her third breastfed
child was about 9 months.  Nothing helped so she was referred to a
dermatologist.  He diagnosed it as psoriasis & it was helped with
cortisone cream.  She continued nursing til that child weaned around 3 +
years.
