Hi Margaret,

I am responding to your post with my own personal experience.

Three years ago, after giving birth to my son, my daughter (then not quite
22 months old) swore off solid food and gained 5 lbs. in 2 months on my milk
alone (just to give you an idea of how much this child was nursing!). Her
baby brother, born at over 9 lbs., also gained rapidly and suffered many of
the same symptoms you described.

Oversupply was definitely my problem, described by my midwife as "you are
feeding a baby with a stomach the size of a walnut enough milk for a 2-year
old").

We started to overcome it by offering the baby the "slow" side (does this
mom recognize a "fast" and "slow" side?) and letting the toddler nurse from
the fast side. However, this ramped up my production in the faster breast
even more, as my toddler was nursing at least as often (probbaly more often)
than my baby.

I read about block nursing and decided to give it a try. No matter who
needed to nurse (I didn't do the two-babies-at-once-thing), I offered the
same side, starting with a 4-hour block. I hand-expressed enough for my own
comfort when the other side started to feel full during that 4-hour block.
Then I let both children nurse from the other side for 4 hours. I
eventually made it to 6-7 hour blocks before I noticed a regulation in my
milk production but the reduction in my baby's symptoms was almost
immediate.

Once we had production on track and everyone seemed happy again, I
ultimately (at around 2-3 months, I'd guess) assigned Anna my slow side and
Simon (baby) the "fast" side. I tandem nursed them until Anna was almost 4,
just shy of 2 whole years.

It looks as if I will be doing it again, as Simon just passed his 3rd
birthday with no sign of giving up his "uns" and a baby expected in the next
two months!

Good luck and feel free to contact me if you have any other questions about
my experience,
Diana in NY
