Got a query last night from a nurse who has been helping lots of moms
breastfeed - including a family member whose baby had a great deal of
difficulty nursing - but by 4 months all was going great guns. He started
some solids at around 7 months (not too interested) but by 9 months was
eating a variety of foods - cereals, fruits, vegetables, some meats.

Problem:

Dr.'s visit at 11 months - weight was on the same scale - same weight as at
6.7 months (birth wt. 7 - 1[3.247K], discharge wt 6-3 [2.835K], current
(and 6 month weight) 11.6 lbs.[5.171K])
MD also reported no change in height.

MD also said there had been no head growth, but mom didn't remember his
measuring the head, and can't imagine this is true, as she has had to get
bigger hats.

Diagnosis - her milk is not good enough and she's starving the baby - must
go to formula x 7 days, and will run other tests if no change in weight.

Additional information:
Baby is not crawling - will sit and play with items for 10 minutes or more
but "his fine motor skills are better than his gross motor skills". He
will roll over from front to back - hates being on his tummy.

Mom, though overweight, is not on any special diet, though she eats
"erratically. She's not on Birth Control pills, but is taking thyroid, no
other Meds.

Dad is VERY slender, but not small.

I was called to give names of MDs for a second opinion.

We also discussed food alternatives rather than formula and no
breastfeeding....any other suggestions?
