Hi, everyone. I am a few days behind on reading posts, but have
already seen several on protocols for urinary/fecal output (I
still prefer peeps and poops, sorry :->) in the first week of
life. Didn't we discuss a while back remarkable stories of 2 week
intervals between stools? Are the "rules" different for newborns
in that first week - after the first meconium poop? I'm a little
confused here....
On the peep side, when my 2nd child, 1st boy, was born, we went
home on 3rd or 4th day, my milk came in about as soon as I
crossed the threshold (probably a sign about how very
unsafe I feel having a baby in that hospital!), Mickie nursed
very well, pooped OK, but did not urinate for over 36 hours. Took
him back to the hospital to try to discover what was going on.
Seems that the penile opening was blocked. In other words,
absolutely nothing to do with nursing.
Thank you, Margery, for bringing up one of my biggest problems:
medicalization of lactation. I am very uncomfortable with
quantifying, measuring, labelling, etc. On the one hand, we
certainly need protocol tools, research and guidelines - I would
be an idiot to deny this. On the other hand, even a much-needed
guideline can be a terrific stressor, not only for the health
professionals (including, but of course, the LCs), but especially
for the moms. I feel ***extremely*** uneasy with this discussion
- pressured, y'know, and I'm neither bfing (nor likely to again,
sniff) nor hospital-based. I have no solutions for this paradox,
and I think this situation is definitely paradoxical. For sure, I
feel pulled both ways, but harder in the direction of **reduce
the postpartum stress**! Oh, dear. Reading it over, I feel I've
expressed myself badly. Hope y'all understand. Judy Knopf, loving
this discussion in spite of discomfort level.
