I've said it before and I'll say it again. I think babies who are
attaching and suckling well will be gaining by day 5-7 - providing
everything is normal with mom and baby. I think if baby is losing or not
regaining, more time needs to be given to find out why. When these
situations are allowed to drift because of the "rules" (10% loss OK, 3
weeks to regain birthweight OK) then I think mom's supply gets
compromised and baby is really into any bad habits they have learned at the
breast. I believe in early, not late observation and intervention by a
trained BF counselor, whether she is the LC, LE, LLLL, visiting nurse, ped
or office nurse.

Over the years I have found the LLLI guide of 4-7 oz gain per week to be
a good starting point. These days with many babies getting more unlimited
access to the breast we are seeing 8-12-16 oz per week as not really
unusual in the early months!
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
