I have been away and am catching up with mail. In the discussion of pnd and
bf, I didn't see mention of the population-based study conducted in Victoria
(which has been discussed previously - and is a must for anyone interested
in pnd).
It was postal survey of all women who gave birth in Victoria in one week in
1989. Response rate was 71.4% (790/1107). Depression was measured by the
Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Odds ratio for depression at 3 months
was 1.76 for bottle feeding (95% CI 1.16-2.65).
This study had a much larger sample size than other studies which found
higher rates of depression in bf women, and is likely to generalisable (did
I make that up?) because it is population-based (ie not based on a
particular hospital or group of patients).
