Ann,

I went to a conference yesterday that Dr. Hale presented at yesterday :) According to the conference Prozac is considered the drug of choice for Gestational Depression. However, it has a cumulative effect in that its metabolite has a very long 1/2 life. 360 hours! The babies are born with the drug in their system and get more through the milk. Thus the need to switch after birth. The s.e. include severe crying, colic, insomnia ect. Moms should be switched p.p.

If baby is 3-4 months old it doesn't seem to be a problem. In newborns watch for s.e. and monitor wt. gain as a recent study has shown reduced wt. gain. Meds of choice p.p. per this conference in order are:

1. Zoloft
2. Paxil
3. Celexa
4. Effexor
5. Prozac

Warmly,
Donna Goggin-Dolwick, RN BSN LCCE IBCLC
