i appreciate all the comments about ethics and corporate involvement and WHO
code. i really need to be reminded of these things and to constantly strive
to do the right thing. however....that stuff seems so "pie in the sky"
compared to the day to day grind i deal with:
today's frustrations: 1. a 4 day old normal baby with bili of 10.5, mother's
milk abundant, has previously bf a baby to 14 mos - baby has to stay in
nursery, mom can't bf, give soy formula to 'flush' out the jaundice, recheck
him in the am and maybe he can go home. 2. a 26 wk premature baby now 5 mos
old, discharged at 4.5 pounds and gained 2 pounds in the month he has been
home, gastroenterologist says he has to catch up and so give soy formula
(who can forget and not give credit to this wonderful mother who pumped for
5 mos!). 3. a mother who is tanden nsg her 21 mo old and 1 day old, who had
a lovely 3 hr bonding time in delivery suite is told by the pedi that she
should bf no more than every 4 hrs and if absolutely necessary give glucose
water in between (lucky the mom knows this is nonsense). also dad was
forbidden to accompany baby to nursery for weighing etc (that's not our
policy), also this couple passed on another pedi who they said would not
permit extended bonding time, but baby has to get to nsy w/i ten minutes. ok
sorry this is a vent, not to be taken as dr. bashing please, but these are
the "reality" issues to work thru first before even getting close to
"ideal." this is enough to make me cry in my pillow. editing a website
doesn't seem like such a bad thing. thanks for listening.
