Hi Catharine,
Medela makes a gauge with a stopper that you stick into the pump flange and
it registers suction pressure (they have an expcted range).
The PIS is guaranteed for a year, ime (I rent and sell), they seem to be
lasting through a second child and lose it shortly after  but that , of
course, depends on the pumping frequency. She could very well be experiencing
the expected decrease in volume at this point but she should have some
ability to gauge this herself by comparing the suction now versus when the
pump worked well.
