>Saw a program last night on The Discovery Channel (or maybe Discovery
>Health) called Alison's Baby. It was about a woman with "limb deficiency"
>(her words) similar to thalidomide effects. She has no arms and very short
>legs. She became pregnant and had a son.

This is artist Alison Lapper, who is well-known to TV audiences here,
as her little boy Paris is one of the 'Child of our time' being
followed since 2000, looking at all sorts of excellent social and
developmental stuff.

I remember her bf after her caesarean, immediately after, in
fact....she is amazing, and her son is, too. She does not pretend her
life as a single mother is easy, and Paris has gone through some
sticky patches, because he has had several different carers. But the
relationship between her and Paris is great. In the last programme,
Paris drew a picture of his mummy with arms and legs, which is how he
still sees her at the moment.

I hope you get to see the filmed sequence of Alison and Paris
crossing a busy road. She cannot hold his hand, and he walks beside
her, aged no more than 2, obediently, as she encourages him and keeps
him by her side by words and personality alone...'Good boy, Paris,
aren't you a good boy, staying close to Mummy, what a good boy,
that's right, stay with Mummy all the way, good boy....you're doing
so well, that's right.....' all the way to the other side!!

I would like to think her bf has helped that relationship.
