Karen, I was at a conference in Richmond in Sept and heard a talk on sensory
integration disfunction. When I see a baby with consistent feeding
difficulties that don't seem to be related to latch or OA letldown or anything
obvious, I start asking questions especially if there is an older child who
also had feeding difficulties. I guess I'm sensitive to this because how I
wish I had known this with my 3rd child. You might inquire of the mother
about the baby's need for structure and general disposition. Does he seem to
frustrate easily? Is he typically happy one minute and crying the next? The
speaker at the conference, Nancy Williams,MA, MFT, CCE, IBCLC, gave a
wonderful presentation. She stated that sensory integrative disorders almost
always have a history of feeding difficulties in infancy. Just a
thought--might be worth looking into. There is an article in JHL, May 2001, p
145, that might get you started.
