I am no longer a hospital based IBCLC but am a member of our county
Breastfeeding Advisory Council, which is an official county council. We were a Task
Force when we started meeting in 1989, but changed the name to an Advisory
Council since we are ongoing. Our goal is to increase knowledge and the practice of
breasfeeding in our county. We have 3 objectives which are decided each year
but usually remain close to the original ones. We have representatives from
the hospital, health dept, university, MD offices, LLL, comsumers and private
practice IBCLCs. We meet every two months. Our main activity each year is a
breastfeeding conference for health care professionals, held with our Area Health
Education Center. We have planned and carried out the conference for the past
9 years. In the past we have grown to be able to have speakers like Linda
Smith, and Dr JackNewman. This year we are having Marsha Walker. We also have a
quarterly bfing newsletter that is written and printed by the members who take
turns. We also have a speakers listing for area HCPs who may be interested in
having a staff training.
