The only thing I do is triage. I spend 16-24 hours a week working at a pump
rental station. As a CLC I feel that I am not qualified (nor would my IBCLC
employer) to do any 'true' consulting.

I do however take phone calls and help moms with the most common problems. I
tell them I am a student lactation consultant and I may be able to help them.
If my suggestions don't help or they don't feel comfortable with my
credentials then they get a call back from the IBCLC.

After almost 3 years of doing this I feel I have a good handle on most common
problems (oversupply, yeast, engorgement, dairy intolerance) and the most
frequently asked questions (how to know the baby is getting enough? how often
to pump? How to treat 'engorgement' at 3 days pp?) and can help many moms
with a 5-10 minute phone conversation. Anything that is questionable or that
I feel I cannot handle is either given to the IBCLC for a call back-if it can
be handled on the phone-or scheduled for a consult.

Obviously other than basic positioning there is no help for sore nipples
(with no yeast symptoms) over the phone and I am not comfortable nor
qualified to help them. They need to be seen. Weight gain and related issues
are also passed on to the IBCLC.
