On the subject of writing up.
Lara Hopkins and I managed to get a hold of the paper presenting the case of
a women whose baby failed to gain weight after gastric by pass surgery
(analysis of milk samples gave low fat concentrations) and had a bit of a
chat about it off list. Our conclusion was that there was just not enough
information in the paper to get a real idea of what had in fact happened in
this case and that the paper should not have accepted for publication
(forgive me for speaking for you as well Lara). Since the method of
obtaining a representative sample of breast milk for analysis was not
described it seems likely that the author and reviewers were unaware of how
variable milk fat concentration is and how important sampling protocol is
(rationale being if they knew how important this is they would have ensured
that this was in the paper). That said, this appears to be the only paper on
this subject and until someone who knows about breastfeeding writes up
another case it provides a benchmark for all who seek info on breastfeeding
after gastric by pass. Not a good situation!
So another plea for someone to write something up! I know that not all on
Lactnet have the expertise to design and write up experiments/cases etc but
something like this is pretty simple and should anyone have a case to work
with I am sure that there would be plenty of Lacnetters who would assist!
