Hi All,
Need your collective wisdom on this one!
Here in Sacramento, we have been having real probs with lots of wind and lots
of pollens. Moms are calling asking if meds with antihystimines are OK
(Benedryl, Sudafed, etc). I know that as far as the baby goes, Tom's book
says "Ok". But my concern is not directly the baby, it is moms milk supply.
I have heard and have had a couple of cases where the mom taking the
antihyst. had a drop in her supply. There were no changes in the babies BF
behavior, other than they started getting fussier at breast and started
wanting to BF more, moms felt like their supply had dropped (not waking up
full as usual in the morning, feeling softer than normal) and moms were
getting plenty of fluids and rest. The only thing that I can come up with is
that the drying effect of the antihys. also dryed up a bit of moms supply.
This usually seems to happen when mom has been taking the drug for more than
1 day, and it seems to happen with both the short acting and extended action
antihystimines.
Any ideas? Anyone seen the same things? I usually tell my moms to either try
and tough it out (some simply can't) or to take as little as possible and try
to BF the baby more frequently. If the supply does drop, it comes right back
up as soon as mom stops taking the antihys. and it gets out of her system.
TIA!!
Jay
