Help! I met a mom of a 3 1/2 month old yesterday who had a hyst in December
for ovarian cancer. She nursed and pumped through the surgery and "up until
the last minute" before being started on Taxol for her cancer on 2/9/00.
She nursed her first baby 16 months and is sad to stop breastfeeding now,
but according to Dr Hale's book, it is unsafe to breastfeed while on Taxol.
Both her cancer Dr. and her baby's pediatrician have also advised her to
stop nursing.
She will be getting a dose of Taxol every 3 weeks. Her question (and
mine)is whether she could pump for some amount of time after each dose and
then resume breastfeeding. The half life of Taxol is up to 52 hours so
could she resume breastfeeding after pumping and dumping for 72 hours? She
doesn't want to do anything that might harm her baby, but also would like to
keep breastfeeding if it is safe. She will be getting the Taxol for the
next 6 months (a dose every 3 weeks).
Please respond to me privately as well as the list. My digests don't seem
to be working on my work computer system.
Thanks for any help (Dr Hale are you out there?)
