Kathleen,

I would tend to agree with the WIC directors that the intolerance complaints
may stem from difficulties digesting formula in general instead of iron
specifically. In a new moms group that I facilitate, the mothers do
consistently blame the iron content for the baby's symptoms. Usually
concentations are switched, then brands, then types, and gradually the
symptoms lessen. Certainly could be coincidental with the passage of time.
For moms who feel they have to supplement or switch to formula, this
switching around of formulas may give them a sense of solving the problem
(while the problem may be resolving itself with just the passage of time),
and hence less remorse over the loss of changing or ending the breastfeeding
relationship. For some mothers this is a more tolerable solution than
continuing to breastfeed in the face of what they perceive as insurmountable
situations or challenges. With regret disguised, I find opportinities to
point out all the positive aspects of their experience and efforts and
console myself with the idea that a firmer foundation for the future is being
laid.
