My new (nearly two month old) grandbaby had a horrendous diaper rash, though
stools seemed normal. It was bad while I was there, but seemed to clear up
a bit with lots of BTA (butt to air) treatment. Over the next weeks it got
worse and worse -- the peds recommended all sorts of creams which would work
briefly, and then not. Laura was miserable -- as was Jill, of course. No one
was getting any sleep, and nothing was working. Jill then heard from a
friend that Pampers had been reformulated recently (as have Huggies), and that
some babies were really reacting to the diapers. Jill switched to a generic
brand (crunchy granola cloth-diaper momma she is NOT-- though she did use them
first for a couple of days). There was an almost immediate change and her
bottom started healing fairly quickly -- Jill used duoderm for the last little
bit of really raw skin (our version of hydrogel dressings), and now all is
well.

Moral of the story -- if any of your moms are finding their babies have
really bad diaper rashes, often we suggest a dietary change first, figuring it is
in the stool. Have mom check the diapers first, and switch from Pampers or
Huggies if they are using them before doing a dietary manipulation.

And to bring this back to breastfeeding -- I just returned from visiting my
son Tim in NW Africa -- where there are lots of babies all slung on momma's
back -- not a single bottle, bucket, or stroller did I see in over a week.
And no formula in the one "supermarche" we went to.
