This is not a surprise. This is a company that wants to make money. It makes
money by expanding its market. Does anyone really think that this was ever
going to be just about getting out a product for a small number of very low
birthweight babies that need a fortifier for their mother's own pumped
milk? I appreciate that it would be wonderful if all NICU's got rid of
cow's milk based fortifiers in favor of human milk based ones. But it will
not stop there. In the end, we continue to be a society that is focused on
the product, breastmilk, rather than the act of breastfeeding. And as
wonderful as I think that breastmilk is, it is the act of breastfeeding or
being fed at the breast and having that continue for some period of time
that really brings the most benefits to both mothers and babies. But that is
not the message that mothers are getting.
