Wisdom needed from Lactneters. In my enthusiasm for WBW I have devised a
breastfeeding photography contest, have gotten thousands of dollars in
sponsorship (all non formula), and have secured an exhibition in two of our
local malls. My concern is that over the last month I have put up several
lovely breastfeeding posters in the hospital only to be confronted by some
of the staff stating that they were offensive. Now I certainly had a few
words to say in response, but my concern is that if midwives and nurses
have a problem with these photos, then I am stepping in to a bit of a poo
storm in a public location. But we, The Hutt Valley Breastfeeding
Coalition are going ahead with the exhibition and a breastfeeding fashion
show to boot. I happily expect that this show will cause some eyebrows to
rise and some questions to be asked, which I will find as the perfect
opportunity to educate and affirm breastfeedings place in public. We were
considering hanging up quotes that people have heard and having laminated
responses to them ie. “Shouldn’t you be doing that in a bathroom?” in small
red letters followed up by “Would you eat your lunch on a toilet?” in large
green letters. If you have any other comments that you have heard and have
good responses please let me know. We also are going to have laminated
small signs mixed in with the pictures that have the benefits of
breastfeeding on them. I was wondering if any Lactneters have experience in
dealing with the press and have some affirmative comments that I can use to
support the exhibition and show and to feed to those who will be
representing our Coalition in the Mall.
